Setting Up Conversion Tracking Your Ads Team Can Trust
Automated bidding is only as good as the conversions it learns from. A practical checklist for clean, deduplicated tracking.

What is one click really worth to you?
Every modern ad platform uses machine learning to decide who sees your ads and how much to bid. That learning runs on one input: your conversion data. If it is wrong, the platform will confidently optimise toward the wrong thing.
1. Define what counts as a conversion
Write it down. A qualified lead might be “a submitted contact form with a valid email”, not “any visit to the contact page”. Separate primary conversions (the ones bidding should optimise for) from secondary signals such as PDF downloads.
2. Track the action, not the page view
Thank-you page views are a common method, but they double-count when people refresh or bookmark the page. Fire the conversion on the successful submission itself, or guard the thank-you page so it only counts once per submission. (This website does exactly that.)
3. Capture where the lead came from
Store UTM parameters and click IDs (gclid, fbclid) with every lead in your own database or CRM - not only in analytics. When a lead becomes a customer weeks later, you can still see which campaign produced it.
4. Don’t forget calls and WhatsApp
For many businesses, half of enquiries never touch a form. Track clicks on phone numbers and WhatsApp links as conversions, and consider call tracking for calls from people who dial the number manually.
5. Use Google Tag Manager - carefully
A single container managing GA4, Google Ads, Meta and LinkedIn tags keeps things consistent. Use a clear naming convention and document every tag and trigger.
6. Respect consent
Configure consent mode so tags behave according to each visitor’s choice. It is both a legal requirement in many markets and a way to keep modelled data flowing.
7. Test end to end
- Submit each form yourself using Tag Manager’s preview mode.
- Confirm the conversion appears once in each platform.
- Check that the lead record in your database includes its source.
8. Feed back real outcomes
Once basic tracking is reliable, import offline outcomes - qualified, proposal sent, won - back into Google Ads and Meta. This teaches the platforms the difference between a lead and a customer.
Clean tracking is not glamorous, but it is the difference between campaigns that improve every month and campaigns that drift.
